Recently, one of our clients wanted a large group of leaders to explore revealing blind spots. As we met one-on-one, we discussed where the leaders are pretending, hiding, avoiding and even trying hard in order to survive, make it and get by with each other and their boss.

One of the ways we help our clients discover their blind spots is with a tool called a Terministic Screen, which outlines for each leader the inauthentic way of being and the network of conversations and actions that make up that world. A world that is for sure unproductive, time consuming and frustrating for everyone because it rarely produces desired results.

For example, one Manager identified “being patient” as a way to survive not being able to speak up, ask for opportunities or even say when something isn’t working.  She was blind and totally unaware of the impact this was having on her own satisfaction and the productivity of the team. Once she became self-aware that “being patient” was merely a way to avoid being responsible, she was able to see the impact it was having on her and her team. Immediately, she took new action to make requests of her superiors and reveal to her team how she had been pretending.

This cohort took on the brave and rewarding work of uncovering what was not working about THEMSELVES and discovering new ways of being that WILL fulfill their commitments.

Uncovering what is hidden from your view is critical to being an effective leader.  We’re talking specifically about your ways of being that for you are hidden, but for your team, are obvious.  The above manager may have been blind to her own limitations but surely her team was not.  It’s always obvious to everyone else but completely hidden to the one being inauthentic. Did you ever notice how TELLING someone they have a blind spot makes no difference?

Take a look for yourself where you can see it in others but are sure you are completely immune, and blind spots don’t exist for you.  This is when you and your team become the blind leading the blind.  This is truly foolish as everyone has blind spots and becoming self-aware is the pathway to authentic leadership.

The only way out of the blind spots and into the light is to uncover for yourself and be authentic about where you are hiding, pretending, avoiding or just getting by. In any area where you or your team are not producing the intended results, the culprit is sure to be found hiding away in a blind spot.
