Having Your Word Prevail-Part 3
In this series, we will explore what it takes to truly focus on having your word prevail as a leader, ensuring that the commitments you make to the future are fulfilled.
Recently, I worked with a group of leaders to create accomplishment. When I asked them to reflect on their progress, the team struggled to recall any accomplishments from the past three months of taking on Integrity. At first, I was surprised. Over the past year, I’ve witnessed firsthand the team’s completions and extraordinary accomplishments. Their journey offers a powerful example of what it means to truly focus on having your word prevail.
To spark their memory, I asked them to identify one major accomplishment and then another, until finally, they began to recognize what they have achieved. Gradually, they got present to the fact that they had made great strides in transforming their environment into one of productivity. Why, then, weren’t they celebrating these achievements? Why weren’t they acknowledging each other for the great work they had been doing?
The reason is fear. We discovered that the more people highlighted their accomplishments, the more they worried about heightened expectations. Beneath their silence lay a fear of not being able to replicate their success and an aversion to being held accountable for what they now saw as possible. These fears hinder their ability to have their word prevail.
This mindset is detrimental to creating an environment of integrity. Why? Because the power of your word dictates the power of your future. When you acknowledge your ability to keep your word, you reinforce it, giving yourself and your team the capacity to create futures that would not exist without integrity. The ability to focus on having your word prevail is what separates extraordinary leaders from the rest.
Why Celebrating Accomplishments Matters in “Having Your Word Prevail”
Acknowledging accomplishments is crucial. Yet most of us have no muscle to give or receive acknowledgment. This is especially true in environments where being inauthentic is common or even required to survive, or where individuals feel pressured to downplay success to avoid increased responsibility. By contrast, celebrating achievements reinforces your commitment to integrity and empowers your team to aim higher. This is an essential step in ensuring having your word prevail becomes a practice within your organization.
Keeping your word is worth celebrating, no matter how small the achievement may seem. Acknowledge yourself and your team for being leaders who achieve through Integrity. Celebrate your progress and see the difference it makes in your ability to transform what’s possible. Or as we like to say: “Tell your brain it feels good to be your word!”
Steps to Ensure Your Word Prevails
- Set Clear Intentions: Clearly define what your word means to you and your organization.
- Acknowledge Progress: Regularly review and celebrate milestones, no matter how minor they may seem.
- Address Fears: Create a safe environment for your team to share their concerns about heightened expectations and accountability.
- Foster Authenticity: Encourage a culture where achievements are celebrated openly, and integrity is a core value. Remember, integrity is key to consistently having your word prevail.
