Stop Doing it All: How Small Business Owners Can Let Go & Thrive
Do you find yourself clinging to the belief that “No one can do it like I do?” Shifting this mindset could be the key to achieving the growth and results you’ve been searching for.
How Shifting Your Perspective Can Unlock Business Growth
Recently, I’ve been working with a small business owner who has been carrying her business on her own for over 20 years. As she approaches retirement age, she’s questioning what is holding her back from building and managing a team. Up until now, she has been involved in every transaction from beginning to end and it is no longer sustainable.
We started by asking a simple question: “What do you say to yourself when you are doing it all?”
Her immediate response was, “No one else can – or will – do it like I do.” This mindset was like handcuffing herself to the steering wheel of a runaway truck. As long as she related to herself as the business, there was no way to escape being the one who did everything, endured everything, and ultimately never found the freedom to retire.
Can you relate to this common trap for small business owners? Over time, owners become stuck in the cycle of doing it all and fear that delegating will mean losing control of their business. The thought of entrusting others feels like a risk to everything they’ve worked so hard to build.
After all, many small businesses start out this way: your idea, your money, your sweat and tears. The business feels like your child – your baby – and in many cases, your everything. But here’s the problem: you can’t effectively grow a business with this mindset, and you certainly can’t live a full, abundant life if you’re on call every minute.
Embracing Delegation: The Key to Sustainable Success
A simple shift in mindset can be transformative. Instead of thinking of it as “my business” or seeing yourself as the business, try reframing it: This is a business, and I am an asset of the business.” This mental shift can be a breath of fresh air and a sigh of relief. “The Business” has assets, and you are one of them – but it also needs other assets to truly thrive. The purpose of the business is not for you to survive – it’s for you to thrive.
When my small business owner adopted this new perspective, she quickly recognized how limiting her previous mindset had been. She realized that part of her resistance to delegating came from her desire to take all the credit for her business’s success. When she valued the praise from her clients, she also understood that her deeper intention was to deliver a great experience and high-quality product to her clients while living an abundant life.
Business exists to serve their owners, not the other way around. Embracing this simple shift in mindset can be a game changer for small business owners ready to take the next step toward growth and freedom.
