At Leaders Team one of our core values is “to bring love to everything we do.” What does it look like to bring love to everything we do? It is a bold value for us to profess as this value trues us up on who we need to be for the people we work with within our business. What is required to honor the value of bringing love to everything we do is a vigilant practice of giving up if there is anything wrong with what is happening at the moment. Our human condition of making ourselves right and other people and situations wrong naturally takes us to listen to situations and people as right or wrong. This way of listening leads us to be separate from the people around us. The intentional act of giving up that anything is wrong allows us to be connected and present with people and what they are dealing with. This kind of listening gives people the freedom and space to work through their challenges.

Leading with Love

Leading with Love in the background engenders the possibility of high performance. When people experience you truly care about them they are more open to coaching and being high performers as their self-expression rather than proving themselves.

There is a lot of information out there about leaders relating to their teams with more empathy and how to be more empathetic to their concerns. When you have to force yourself to be more empathetic I suggest you are relating to people through your opinions of them and that limits your relationship and the performance of the relationship.

Love as a leadership practice

What I am going to say may be a stretch for some leaders but I find it valuable to lead with love.  What I mean by this is when you come from loving people you don’t need to worry about, “Am I being compassionate enough, or am I demonstrating enough empathy for this person? It teaches you the practice of giving up that there is something wrong with what they say or how they express themselves.

Bringing love to everything you do also means loving your work. We look for people who see their work as an opportunity to make a noteworthy contribution and see how their self-expression forwards what we are all up to together as a team.

Honoring people through their word

When you come from love, you begin to listen to people, who are their word with you. Their word is their expression of their role in the organization. A loving leader honors people in their word. People’s word becomes their self-expression. It is honorable to hold people accountable for their word.

When you love the people you lead it is natural to listen to what matters to them and what is important to them. You authentically care about what they are challenged with and support them in creating a win-win scenario for them and for the business.
