Paving the way to success with a new team member
Paving the way to success with a new team member
As a leader one critical aspect to developing a high performing team is acting true to your word to your people and them honoring their word and operating with integrity with you and their new colleagues. Ultimately for a group of people to become a high performing team they must be able to rely on one another to perform as their word. Over years of coaching small businesses, including my own, I have learned that if anyone is going to be successful it starts with strengthening the muscle of giving your word to others and performing as the word you give. Is sounds quite simple and what I have seen is that it can be the most challenging.
Setting a new member of the team up for success begins with training the new member of the team that integrity and their word matters to their successful performance, workable relationships and to the entire team. A good strategy for creating this environment where integrity matters can start with a robust 90-day onboarding plan to establish a pathway for success.
It works to think ahead about what performance outcomes you will be expecting related to their performance in the first 90 days, 60 days and 30 days. For additional input Interview other team members for their thoughts and ideas about what they see needs to be accomplished by this new member in this critical time frame.
If possible, setting them up with administrative support as a go to person that is accountable for the new employee getting to meetings, support with logistics, and learning new software.
Including other members of the team in this plan with you will also support the success. Onboarding a new team member can be time consuming so it’s a good idea to include other team members as training partners in your plan. This is valuable time spent for the new member of the team. This is their opportunity to get related to other team members and understand the value each team member contributes while establishing new relationships and promoting future collaboration. Using your team’s strengths to onboard a new member supports strengthening your team’s comradery. I recommend working with each team members plan for spending time with the new employee. Go over what they will be creating with the new member of the team and what outcomes you expect from each of these meetings.
Managing this person to keep all their agreements will be critical to supporting their success. In addition, you are doing what you said you would do and on time is essential. You must walk your talk.
Set up a 30, 60 day and 90-day meeting and go over the outcomes for each 30-day period so expectations and outcomes are on track.
Make sure you publicly celebrate success and acknowledge your new team member for reaching their first goals and acknowledging team members for being a part of that success.
