Why Smart Business Leaders Embrace Failure to Achieve Epic Growth

Read Time: 3 minutes

Great leaders embrace failure not as defeat, but as the secret ingredient to epic growth. If you’re not expecting to fail at some of your goals, you’re probably not aiming high enough.

We mean really fail. The kind of failure that has you sitting in your car for a few minutes before walking into the office, rehashing how it all fell apart. The kind of failure that forces you to get brutally honest with yourself, your team, and your vision.

The problem is, most business owners are addicted to “safe wins.” They’d rather stick to the familiar, predictable three-mile running loop through the neighborhood than tackle speed work and weekly long runs. A safe win keeps them moving and feels like progress, but it’s not growth.

Integrity: A Mountain with No Top

Leadership books often declare, “Always keep your word.” That sounds noble, but if you always keep your word, you’re likely playing a small game.

Consider this: If you only commit to what you know you can deliver, you never stretch into challenges that actually require expansion and growth.

In reality, integrity is a mountain with no top. You’re never “done” with it. You will give your word to things you can’t always fulfill. When that happens, it’s not about pretending you didn’t fail—it’s about honoring your word by:

  • Communicating early when success is in jeopardy
  • Cleaning up the impact when you drop the ball
  • Recommitting or making a new promise

Real leadership lives here – not in perfection or predictability, but in how you handle missed outcomes. When leaders embrace failure, they transform it into valuable lessons that push their organizations forward

What Are You Really Standing For?

Let me challenge you with these questions:

  • What do you stand for?
  • What are you standing for right now in your business?
  • Are you willing to give your word to it, knowing you might fail?

Be careful here. There’s a crucial difference between choosing and simply agreeing or going along with something.

If you’re merely agreeing because you think you have to, you should, or because everyone else is doing it, that’s not leadership – that’s drift. Leadership means choosing something and giving your word to it because it matters deeply, even when it scares you. True leadership means knowing that leaders embrace failure as a natural part of innovation.

You Are Not a Failure, But You Can Fail to Perform

Here’s the distinction most people miss: You can fail to perform without being a failure.

One concerns results. The other concerns identity.

When you take on epic challenges, you will sometimes fail to perform. That’s not a character flaw – that’s just physics. It’s the natural byproduct of operating beyond your comfort zone, beyond what you currently believe is possible.

Why Predictable Failure Shows Why Leaders Embrace Failure

Some of my clients’ most valuable leadership growth came from taking on commitments where they could predict partial failure:

  • Launching service models they didn’t yet have infrastructure to support
  • Speaking at conferences where they weren’t sure the audience would “get” them
  • Setting revenue goals that looked absurd on paper

Every time, the failures taught them more about their capacity, their team, and their blind spots than any “safe win” ever could. Every time my clients took bold steps and failed, they grew faster—because leaders embrace failure, not avoid it.

Your Epic Leadership Challenge

Here’s my invitation to you:

  • Give your word to something so big you can’t guarantee success
  • Expect failure along the way and welcome it as feedback
  • Honor your word when you fall short, then recommit
  • Stand for something you choose, not something you drift into

When you start operating at this level, you stop being the business owner who’s just “getting by” and become the leader who’s redefining what’s possible.

Because here’s the truth: If you’re not failing at something, you’re probably not leading—you’re just managing.
