Are you a Transactional or Transformational Leader and what difference does that make?

Both styles are utilized throughout the business community today.

Transactional Leaders are focussed on compliance and order, clear roles and expectations, which does lead to a culture of predictability and stability.  They set clear goals and expectations, monitor performance and reward productive behaviour.  They maintain a focus on routine, ensuring efficiency and consistency.

In the early years of Microsoft’s launch, co-founder Bill Gates used Transactional Leadership to establish systems, manage performance, and achieve business goals. This foundation of leadership is largely credited with the company’s long-term success and its current net worth of $3.2 trillion as of May 28, 2024.

Transformational Leaders lead with a compelling vision and engage employees emotionally, giving them a sense of ownership.  They encourage their teams to think creatively and to challenge the status quo.  Support and mentorship are essential to the growth of individuals within the organization. These leaders act as role models and demonstrate the behaviours expected of others. This creates a culture of trust, innovation and collaboration.  Employees feel valued and empowered, leading to higher engagement and loyalty.

Under Steinhafel’s leadership, more than 400 Target stores were outfitted with technology for curbside pickup of internet orders. Stock prices rose from $53 in 2006 to over $238 in 2022. In a Business Insider article, Steinhafel is quoted as calling leadership “a ‘coaching staff’ for employees, rather than a group of decision makers.”

Transactional Leadership is best in environments with well-defined tasks and processes and is effective in achieving short-term goals and managing routine operations.  Excellent characteristics in manufacturing or finance.

Transformational Leadership, on the other hand, is best in dynamic, changing environments where innovation and strategic shifts are needed.  It focuses on change and transformation, encouraging employees to transcend their self-interests for the good of the group.  Organizations focussed on long-term growth and development would benefit from Transformational Leadership.  Areas such as technology or health care or organizations going through mergers or acquisitions.
