Culture and Strategy for Business Resilience

Peter Drucker famously said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” While this is true, I believe the most successful companies recognize the power of combining culture and strategy to drive resilience and results. A strategy without a strong culture is just a collection of good ideas. Similarly, a positive culture without a strategy is simply a great place to hang out. The two are deeply intertwined in great companies.

A Real-World Example of Aligning Culture and Strategy.

In 2018, I started working with a progressive company that wanted to create a culture of respect and inclusion. They operated in the financial services industry, which relies heavily on long-term employee relationships to build trust with clients. For them, a strong, positive culture that retained employees was critical. From this foundation, they also wanted to establish a framework for sales and strategic execution.

Though they were a sales organization, they hadn’t focused much on sales management. Additionally, while they held annual strategy meetings, they often struggled with execution.

Over the next two years, we introduced several concepts that improved both internal and external communication. These initiatives fostered a higher level of personal responsibility than had existed before. Following their 2019 strategy meeting, the CEO shared that the team had accomplished more in one quarter than they had in the previous two years. Sales were ahead of plan, and the team was thriving.

Pivoting Culture and Strategy During COVID.

Then COVID hit. I met with the Senior Leadership Team and said, “We have to pivot on the strategy” and asked the following question; “How do you want to be remembered when this is over.”

What do you want people saying about what you did during COVID? Consider the following groups:

  • Employees
  • Clients
  • Suppliers
  • The Community at Large

They began by listing the outcomes they wanted to achieve and then created specific strategies to produce those results. Over the next two weeks, they transitioned all staff to remote work, purchased the necessary technology to ensure productivity, and maintained seamless client service.

The company launched a COVID facts newsletter for employees and clients, arranged for counselors to support employees, and continued their community involvement. They also celebrated the contributions of essential workers in the community.

By the end of 2021, the company had achieved remarkable results. Employee and customer retention were both excellent. While many companies in their industry struggled during the pandemic, this organization grew its revenue. Their success was the result of intentional culture, intelligent strategy, and exceptional execution—proving that culture and strategy together can drive resilience and growth.
